SMK N 4 Yogyakarta is one of tourism group vocational schools in Yogyakarta Special Province. Formerly, it occupied SMKK N building located in 2nd Kenari street Yogyakarta and held its evening classes. Since January 1st 1982, it has been occupying the new building located in 60 Sidikan Street Yogyakarta. 

The number of the teachers and official staffs is about 180, consists of  permanent and non permanent teachers/staffs. The following are the names of the headmasters who have led SMK N 4 Yogyakarta in several periods:in 1976 up to January 8th 1988  Mrs. Rumiyati Soegiharto, 1988 up to  30th Septembers 1994,  Ms. Siti Rochani Kusnadi, 1st October 1994 up to  31st  Augusts 1998, Ms. Sartini Sri Widjojo, September 1st  1998 up to Januari 31st  1999   Drs. Arief AM.Noor,  February 1st  1999 up to  April 13th  2002, Drs. Sugeng Sumiyoto, April 14th 2002 up to December 2007,Drs. Marwata HN., January 2008 up to present, Mrs. Dra. Sri Indiyah Purwaningsih

As the part of tourism groups, SMK N 4 Yogyakarta has a function to produce graduates who are able to work in the mid-level of industrial world and possess knowledge and skills based on the chosen department.

To support the education process especially for the double system education, the school invites the society to take apart in BP3 or in the form of school committee to formulate and arrange the school programs to get the professionalism of the graduates and the marketing of the graduates.

The stake holder which consists of:  Kadinda, Depnaker, Depdiknas, Industrial partner, and also the society is expected to be the bridge for the school and industrial world.
